Water resources management of Narayanganj district

Bangladesh is a river delta. Most of the rivers of this country originate from the Himalayas or various mountains of India, enter the country through the northern region, flow through the central region and fall into the Bay of Bengal through the southern region. Narayanganj is a district of Dhaka Division located in the central part of Bangladesh. Narayanganj river port is a famous river port located on the banks of Shitalakshya river. The district is bordered by the Shitalakshya, Buriganga, Balu River, Dhaleswari, Old Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers, adjacent to the capital Dhaka. The district is surrounded by various rivers and small canals and reservoirs. Narayanganj is mainly an industrial district. As a result of continuous urbanization due to its proximity to the capital Dhaka, most of the agricultural land is used for residential plots and industrial plants. The rivers, canals and reservoirs of this district are being polluted and damaged in various ways due to industrial waste, man-made and natural causes. Therefore, every year the government through the Bangladesh Water Development Board conducts activities such as excavation of damaged rivers, canals and reservoirs, embankment, construction of dams etc. 


Narayanganj District has an Executive Engineer's Office/Divisional Office for proper management of Bangladesh Water Development Board activities for water resources management.

There are 2 water development sub-divisions under Narayanganj Water Development Division. 

1. Narayanganj Water Development Sub-Division, Bangladesh Water Development Board, Narayanganj. 

2. Sonargaon Water Development Sub-Division, Bangladesh Water Development Board, Narayanganj. 


There are 3 Sections under each sub-division. Each Sub-Division is headed by a Sub-Divisional Engineer and each Section is headed by a Sub-Assistant Engineer.
